What Drove Us

15,000 hours.
That's how long a child spends in school.

Think about that. It's the same time it takes to master classical dance, become a skilled cricket player, or learn the intricate art of pottery making. Now imagine those hours filled with purpose. Not just memorizing facts, but discovering talents, following curiosities, and building dreams.

Sir Ken Robinson’s influential TED Talk and book "The Element" explore how creativity is a natural part of human development that is often suppressed in traditional education systems. We are all born with infinite potential to thrive; we just need the right environment to flourish.

Kshamtalaya is reimagining the foundational stages (about 45% of those 15,000 hours) to build a strong foundation in children, helping them navigate challenges and enhance their creative potential.

Our Story

A Journey From Kotra

A brief history of Kshamtalaya Foundation, our founding principles, and the journey so far.

What ‘Education’ Meant

The work began in a remote tribal-rural Block named Kotra, 100 kms from Udaipur. Vivek Kumar, Alokesh Sharma, and Pooja Singh immersed in the communities and realized real challenges impacting children’s continuity in school. Despite low literacy rates and high drop-outs, the children weren't "uneducated." They knew true community collaboration during floods. They could swim, navigate paths in starlight, identify edible berries, and balance to climb trees for livelihood. What defines education then? We delved into rich literature to gain a deeper understanding of what schooling should look like in Kotra.

Head-Heart-Hand

Inspired by the Gandhian ideology of immersing ourselves in action and theories of experiential learning, we realized children retain longer when involved in the learning process. Rote-learning doesn’t support children to prepare for a dynamic world as strongly as experiential methods do. Experiential learning makes children more alert, demonstrates logical capabilities, and gives blueprints to look at real-world problems. We devised holistic learning models integrating Social Emotional Learning. For instance, a mindfulness-integrated Geography curriculum for 7th graders visibly showed how personalized experiences help students retain concepts longer.

Not Just Classrooms

We realized we cannot do it all by ourselves-and we shouldn't! Education cannot just happen in classrooms where we pack up and walk out. We HAVE to work with school leaders, local governance, parents, and stakeholders like Sarpanch and SMC members. The entire system must strengthen to support a child's holistic growth. This led to our mission: to establish centers of excellence in the most remote geographies along with regional leaders, facilitated through the regional youth for the most sustainable impact.

Our Approach

A 3-Pronged Strategy

After 10 years of working across 3 geographies, Kshamtalaya has arrived at a robust 3-pronged approach to inch closer to our vision: Demonstrate, Sustain & Scale.

1. Demonstrate

Demonstrate & transform public schools as spaces of inspiration where learning & well-being are integrated and practices are visible for our partners: students, teachers, parents & governance.

2. Sustain

Sustain interventions through a cadre of education leaders at every systemic level-from School to State-who will champion this vision in their area of influence.

3. Scale

Draw insights from these initiatives and collectively contribute to making Well-being the state’s & nation’s priority through long-lasting policy interventions.

Who We Are

Our Values

1. Compassion

"Compassion is recognizing suffering, understanding its universality, and taking action to alleviate it with empathy and care."

At Kshamtalaya, we integrate compassion by supporting students, teachers, and communities in their challenges, ensuring we respond with empathy and create nurturing environments for growth.

2. Freedom with Responsibility

"True freedom comes with the responsibility to be accountable for your actions, making choices that impact others and owning both successes and mistakes."

We empower our educators and students to make decisions and take ownership of their learning and growth, fostering an environment where responsibility is valued alongside freedom.

3. Excellence

"Excellence is about striving to be better every day, dedicating yourself to doing your best and growing through each experience."

In our work, excellence is evident in our commitment to continuously improving educational practices and striving for the highest standards in every program we implement.

4. Trust

"Trust is the foundation of a safe and engaged environment, built on transparency, unconditional support, and the reliability of keeping commitments."

Kshamtalaya fosters trust by being transparent in our processes, encouraging open communication, and creating spaces where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth rather than failures.
